Shoubak Castle, also known as Montreal, is a historic Crusader castle in southern Jordan, located along the route between Amman and Petra. Built in the 12th century, the fortress played an important role as a military stronghold controlling trade and travel routes through the region.

Today, Shoubak offers visitors a quieter and more atmospheric alternative to some of Jordan’s larger archaeological sites, while still providing a fascinating glimpse into medieval history.

History of Shoubak Castle

The castle was constructed by the Crusaders as part of a network of fortifications designed to protect important trade routes and territories. Over time, the fortress changed hands several times and was used by different rulers, leaving behind layers of architectural features and historical remains.

Walking through Shoubak allows visitors to experience a different period of Jordan’s history compared to the Roman and Nabataean sites found elsewhere in the country.

Shoubak Castle is located about 25 km north of Petra and roughly 160 km south of Amman. Because of its location, it is often visited on the way to or from Petra. The site is less crowded than many of Jordan’s major attractions, allowing visitors to explore at a relaxed pace.
