Mukawer (Machaerus)
The Fortress of John the Baptist and a Historic Biblical Site in Jordan

Mukawer, known in ancient times as Machaerus, is an archaeological site and hilltop fortress located southwest of Madaba, overlooking the Dead Sea region. The site is best known for its importance in early Christian history, as it is traditionally believed to be the place where John the Baptist was imprisoned and executed.
Today, Mukawer is one of the most significant biblical and historical sites in Jordan, attracting pilgrims, history enthusiasts, and travelers interested in archaeology.
Historical and Religious Significance
According to historical and biblical tradition, Herod Antipas, the ruler of the region during the Roman period, imprisoned John the Baptist at Mukawer. After publicly criticizing Herod’s marriage, John was executed at the fortress, making the site an important destination for Christian pilgrims.
Because of this history, Mukawer is often included in itineraries that focus on religious and biblical tours in Jordan.

Visitors to Mukawer can explore the remains of the ancient fortress, including:
- Defensive walls and towers
- Courtyards and structural remains

- A small chapel commemorating John the Baptist
The site continues to be studied and preserved, offering insight into Roman and Herodian architecture in the region.

- The surrounding desert landscapes
- The hills and valleys of central Jordan
The peaceful setting and dramatic scenery make the visit both historically meaningful and visually memorable.
